Changing Committee

Reg Drysdale and Donald Denoon stepped down from the ED committee, after several years of much appreciated service.

Jim Anderson (1922-2011)

We are sad to announce the death of Jim Anderson, a member of the East Committee for some twenty years. He used to convene the Atholl Cup, perpetually apologising for not quite managing to raise 32 teams - we dream of so many now, and it would be nice if we could all make an effort to join in next season as a tribute to his efforts. On his retirement he was presented with a Quaich to mark our gratitude for his enormous contribution. He was a quiet, soft-spoken gentleman whom it was impossible to dislike; he made many friends and no enemies, and he will be much missed.

This tribute was written by Ian McRoberts, another former member of the East Committee

”Bridge players in Dunfermline and further afield are saddened by the death of Jim Anderson at the age of 88. Jim was the leading light in Dunfermline Bridge Club for over sixty years and served the club as President or other council member for virtually all of these years. He captained the Dunfermline A team in the East of Scotland League for over forty years, winning the league title and leading Dunfermline Teams to victory in the Edinburgh Cup, an invitation event now sadly defunct, and the Atholl Cup, the East’s team of four competition.

He represented the East of Scotland against the West of Scotland and the North-East of England, won many other East district tournaments and, of course, won every Dunfermline Club tournament it was possible to win. Indeed just this year, more than fifty years after his first victory, he was victorious in the Club Pairs Championship.

Why was he so successful? First and foremost he was an excellent card player, and he was a careful and disciplined bidder. Not for him the flamboyant gambit that so frequently results in -1400 or so - in fact I don’t think he wrote -1400 on his card in his whole career! He made few errors and in many ways bridge is a game of mistakes, so minimising these often leads to success.

I had the privilege of being a partner and team-mate of Jim’s for over fifty years. We had a lot of fun, and his passing will leave my bridge world a poorer place. He will be mourned by all who knew him.”
