World Bridge Games

Congratulations again to the Scottish Ladies’ team who finished a fabulous fourth in a largely pro field at the World Bridge Games in Wroclaw. Well done to our team of Sam, Anne, Helen, Fiona, Liz and Paula. Photo by Danny Kane.

Tournament knockout scores are here … and the main tournament website is here.

Participation of clubs in SBU events like the Simultaneous Pairs and Easter and Autumn Pairs helps us to finance our teams abroad and every little helps.

Diamonds Are Forever (Eleanor Bailey, Graeme Towers, Carolyn Girvan, Joyce Clemie, Karolina Towers, Penny McKerrow) with the Novice League Trophy

Final result for the novice Summer League — Diamonds Are Forever, Joyce Clemie’s team, get the trophy by winning 4 out of 6 of their home and away matches. Ruff Diamonds and Whatsappateers, Margaret Innes and Johnny Everett’s teams tied with 3 wins each and with 2 Ruff and Ready, Tim Wilkinson’s team. Very close and a very enjoyable and worthwhile summer. Thanks for all their work and indeed to to the Ruff Diamonds who provided home baking for their home matches!

MATCHES v NEBA

NEBA (North East Bridge Association....Newcastle area) welcomed the East District to Berwick for their annual matches. The A team were represented by Liz McGowan & David Liggat, Brian Short & Fiona McQuaker, Fiona Greenwood & Veronica Guy and Derrick Peden & Tim McKay.

The match was played over four stanzas of 12 boards. Their first set was -18 imps, recovered in the second to go 5 imps ahead but after losing 17 imps in the third had a deficit of 12 imps going in to the final set. They managed a +10 to narrowly lose a very close match by 2 imps...so the Newcastle Journal Trophy travels south.

Representing the B team were Lucia Barrett & Jake Corry, John Hamilton & Gordon Kirk, David & Wendy Chambers and Jim Wilkinson & Catriona Gardiner. They got off to a good start being 19 imps up in the first set but lost the next three sets to lose their match by 20 imps. The Edinburgh Salver also heads south.

This was a reversal of the 2015 results and Eastern District will be hoping to regain both trophies in 2017.
