Atholl Cup Pivot Teams of Four

The 2011/12 Atholl Cup Competition

The Atholl Cup is the East District’s knockout pivot teams event, and entries are now being accepted by Alan Officer ( or 0131 3432560) until 9th October. Entry costs £20 per team. Each team captain plays 10 boards with everyone else in their team, making a 30 board match.

After last year’s extensive weather problems, the Atholl scheduling was subject to unacceptable delays. This year the committee anticipates that all teams will make every effort to complete their matches to schedule to prevent similar chaos this year! In accordance with the rules, a named substitute is permitted in the event of a team member being unable to meet any of the available dates.

At the November committee meeting of the East District, ways of encouraging more teams to enter the Atholl Cup in future years were discussed, and since we had a nice well rounded entry this year of 16 teams, it has been decided to run an “Atholl Plate”, for the 8 teams knocked out in the first round of the Atholl Cup. This will guarantee this year’s Atholl Cup entrants a minimum of 2 matches. A trophy will be provided for the competition.

This will be a trial event and will run this season. If it proves a success, we will look at ways in which the event might be developed further. We'll canvas opinions later in the season.

The match format will be identical to the Atholl Cup - three sets of ten boards played with each of your team mates in turn, and the calendar will run in parallel with that event. Presumably the final is likely to be a longer event, in line with the Atholl Cup.

The competition has its own fan club on Facebook!

About the Atholl

The Atholl Cup is the East District Pivot Teams of Four Championship.

It is a Knock-out pivot Teams of Four where the Captain plays one-third of the boards with each of his team members. Matches consist of 30 boards (in 3 sets of 10) played at both tables, although in the Final the rules specify 48 boards should be played, though a single session of 36 may be played by agreement between the two captains.

The two Captains play against each other throughout, and their partners alternate in turn, so each team member plays with all other members over the three stanzas.

After each set of 10 boards the boards should be IMPed, and the match position tallied.

For Conveners

Please consult the "Guidelines for Running East District Events", and forward any necessary amendments for future reference to the Committee.

There are no particular entrance qualification requirements for the Atholl Cup other than membership of the East District. The draw is seeded for the preceding year’s Semi Finalists.

Substitute players are acceptable subject to the following:

  1. the opposing team captain agrees to the change in advance
  2. there is no other way to have the fixture completed within an acceptable timescale
  3. the substitute must not be of a clearly higher standard than the player they are replacing
  4. only one substitute may be used during the course of the tournament (though they could appear more than once if necessary e.g. to cover for a prolonged absence)

In the event of a team winning the trophy having utilised a substitute in any match, the original four team members are seen as the winning team for the purposes of engraving and record keeping.
